Beyond the Ranch: Things to Do Around Westgate River Ranch

By Michelle Chandler ·

Westgate River Ranch could fill an entire vacation on its own, but the ranch sits in one of Florida's richest natural regions, and the country around it is part of the appeal. Eastern Polk County is where the peninsula's big water, working ranches, and small ridge towns meet. Here is the honest, practical tour of what is just beyond the gates: the rivers and lakes, the wildlife, the fishing, and the nearby communities where you will actually shop, eat, and run errands.

The Kissimmee River

The ranch's western boundary is the Kissimmee River itself, a restored natural waterway that flows south toward Lake Okeechobee. It is scenic, teeming with wildlife, and quietly powerful: airboats and pontoons share the water with wading birds, alligators, and ospreys, and sunrise on the river is one of the great free shows in Florida. The ranch's own marina offers pontoon rentals and guided airboat experiences if you want to explore from a comfortable base, and the river's banks are a reliable place to spot herons, egrets, and the occasional bald eagle.

Lake Kissimmee and the chain of lakes

Just downstream, Lake Kissimmee covers more than 34,000 acres and ranks among Florida's largest lakes. It anchors the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, a connected system that runs from Lake Tohopekaliga in the north down through Hatchineha and Kissimmee. The chain is legendary among anglers: largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and speckled perch are the headline species, with public boat ramps and fish camps scattered around the shores. Water skiers, kayakers, and pontoon families use the same waters, and the lake country overall feels a generation removed from Orlando's theme parks.

Wildlife viewing without a tour fee

Some of the best wildlife viewing requires nothing but a quiet spot and patience. Sandhill cranes stalk the pastures around the ranch, bald eagles nest near the big lakes, herons and egrets work every shoreline, and deer are common around dusk. Alligators are part of the landscape, and visitors from the north always get a kick out of their first gator sunning on a bank. Winter brings migrating waterfowl and the most comfortable weather for long outdoor days, which is why the snowbird months are the liveliest season here.

Fishing and outdoor recreation

Public water access in the region is excellent. Beyond the chain, the area offers parks, boat ramps, and quiet county roads that make for great cycling and photography. If you want a guide, local fish camps and charter services on Lake Kissimmee have been running trips for generations. For horseback, trap and skeet, archery, and the full activity menu, the ranch itself remains the hub, and the surrounding country gives you room to roam on your own terms.

Nearby communities: Lake Wales and beyond

The closest full-service town is Lake Wales, roughly half an hour north of the ranch and well worth the drive on its own. Historic downtown Lake Wales has a real Main Street, the lakeside Bok Tower Gardens towers over one of Florida's most beautiful landscapes, and the town anchors a chain of lakes that rivals any in the state. Above that, Winter Haven offers the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes and LEGOLAND; to the south, Sebring brings its famous raceway and Highlands Hammock State Park. Smaller towns like Frostproof and Lake Placid sit between them, each with its own corner of Old Florida character. Our Lake Wales community guide goes deeper on the town to the north.

An honest word about the rural setting

Let me be straight about what the area is and is not. River Ranch is rural Polk County, and that is both its charm and its reality. Full-service grocery shopping, medical care, and the big-box aisles live in the nearby towns: Lake Wales and Winter Haven to the north, Sebring and Avon Park to the south. Roads are frequently two-lane country routes, wildlife crossings are real after dark, and the nearest commercial airport is a drive away. Buyers who love the remoteness love exactly that; buyers who want daily conveniences within minutes will feel the distance. The right fit depends on what you actually want from a weekend, a vacation rental, or a retirement, and there is no wrong answer, only a wrong match.
